Psalm 139: Always Seen, Always Known

May 8, 2025

Have you ever moved to a new city, attended a new church, or started a job at a new workplace and felt completely invisible?

You step into a room, and no one knows your name. No one knows your birthday, your favorite sports team, or how you take your coffee. They definitely don’t know your past, the family dynamics you’re juggling, the silent battles you’re fighting, or the hurts you carry in your heart. You may do your best to seem okay—but inside, you feel alone.

We all want to be known. Deeply and truly known. In moments when we feel overlooked, misunderstood, or like we’re just floating through life without anyone really seeing us—Psalm 139 is a gentle but powerful reminder that we are never alone. We are always seen, always known—by the One who made us.

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar…”

(Psalm 139:1–2)

God doesn’t just see you in passing—He has searched you and knows you. Intimately. Thoroughly. He knows when you wake up feeling heavy. He knows when you sit down weary after a long day. He even knows the thoughts you don’t say out loud—the ones you barely admit to ourselves. He knows every word before it’s even spoken.

“You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me…”
(Psalm 139:5)

That phrase—“You hem me in”—it’s not about restriction, but protection. It’s the image of a God who surrounds you on all sides. Before you ever stepped into that unfamiliar room or new season of life, He was already there. Already aware of your every need.

The psalmist continues:

“Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there…”
(Psalm 139:7–8)

There is nowhere you can go where God isn’t already present. Whether you find yourself on a spiritual mountaintop or in the depths of grief and despair—He is with you. Leading you and holding you. Even in the darkest moments of your life, He sees with clarity. What feels like night to you is like daylight to Him.

“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,’
even the darkness is not dark to you…”
(Psalm 139:11–12)

And here’s the part that always leaves me in awe:

“For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb…”
(Psalm 139:13)

God didn’t just start knowing you when you entered the world—He knew you before you took your first breath. He designed you intentionally. Every part of your being was handcrafted: your mind, your emotions, your quirky personality, your gifts. Nothing about you is random or accidental.

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me…”
(Psalm 139:16)

God doesn’t just know who you are—He knows where you’re going. Every day of your life is seen by Him. When you feel lost or unsure about what’s next, you can take comfort knowing that none of your steps are outside of His view.

So friend, if you’re in a season where you feel like no one truly sees you—remember this:

God sees you.
God knows you.
God loves you.

You are never alone. Not for a single moment.
