Hiking Trails at Ridgecrest

Aug 5, 2026

Did you know that Ridgecrest has its own trail system?  Conference center guests can spend a day hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains without even leaving campus.  If you would like to take a walk in the woods on your next visit, consider one of these trails:

  1. Royal Gorge Trail – .8 mile one way, Moderate – The trailhead begins at the Royal Gorge Fire Ring and follows the ridge up Royal Gorge through dense hardwood forest.  The trail tops out at the Royal Gorge Overlook, where you will be rewarded with a stunning mountain view.  For a real treat, plan to arrive at the summit in time to watch the sunrise.
  1. Rattlesnake Trail – 1.2 miles one way, Strenuous – The trailhead is located above the Rec Gym at Field 3. The trail follows an old road and is well traveled year-round.  It is a steady climb until just before the summit where it becomes steep and technical, with minor rock scrambling to the top.  Rattlesnake Summit is a wonderful place to watch the sunset.  Pack a snack and take time to savor the panoramic mountain view.
  2. Ridgecrest Loop – 4.8 miles counterclockwise, Moderate – If you want to challenge yourself with a longer hike, consider the Ridgecrest Loop.  You will start by hiking up the Royal Gorge Trail, and then you will take the Adventure Trail over to Buck Flats Shelter.  From Buck Flats, you will head toward the Old Mitchell Toll Road and follow it until you reach the Rattlesnake Trail.  After you hike up Rattlesnake Summit, you will head down Rattlesnake Trail to return to the conference center.

*Note: Ridgecrest’s Trail System is located on private property and is only available to registered conference center guests.
