But Take Heart: Jesus’ Encouragement to the Weary

Aug 21, 2025

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

You don’t have to look far to see the brokenness of this world. A quick scroll through social media, a glance at the headlines, or a simple conversation with a friend can reveal a landscape marked by pain, disappointment, and struggle. We are constantly being reminded that this world is not as it should be.

As believers, that reality often weighs even heavier. We know the truth—we know the hope of Christ, the promise of eternity, and the freedom found in Him. Yet that knowledge doesn’t exempt us from sorrow or shield us from suffering. In fact, sometimes it makes the heartache feel sharper. We see what should be and feel deeply what isn’t.

But Jesus knew this. He didn’t hide the hardships of life or sugarcoat what it means to follow Him. In John 16, as He prepared His disciples for His departure, He spoke words they would cling to in the darkest moments of their lives:
“In the world you will have tribulation.”

Not “you might,” not “some will”—you will.

It’s a sobering statement. But it’s not the end.

Right on the heels of this reality check, Jesus offers the ultimate encouragement:
“But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

What does that mean for us today—when we’re weary, discouraged, or barely holding on?

It Means We Can Have Peace in the Middle of the Storm

Jesus doesn’t promise a pain-free life, but He does promise His presence. The peace He offers isn’t based on perfect circumstances but on His perfect victory. When everything around us is uncertain, we can rest in the certainty that Christ is still on the throne.

It Means the Battle Has Already Been Won

We aren’t fighting for victory—we’re standing in it. Jesus’ death and resurrection have already sealed the outcome. Sin doesn’t have the final word. Death doesn’t win. Satan doesn’t triumph. Christ has overcome, and because we are in Him, we are more than conquerors.

It Means We Can Keep Going—Even When It’s Hard

To “take heart” isn’t to fake a smile or deny the weight of our struggles. It’s to fix our eyes on Jesus, to draw strength from His promises, and to walk in faith even when the path is steep. It’s hope with backbone. It’s courage rooted in Christ.

So if your heart is heavy today—if ministry feels overwhelming, if you’re walking through grief, or simply struggling to stay spiritually engaged—know this: you are not alone, and you are not defeated.

Take heart, dear brothers and sisters.
Not because the world is easy.
But because He is greater than it all.

He has overcome.
