While We Wait: 3 Truths from Psalm 62

While We Wait: Finding Comfort in Psalm 62

We’ve all been through seasons of waiting. Waiting on a test result, a job interviewer to call, a child to be born. Life is full of these moments and seasons; they are markers in our lives. As believers, we are often waiting on God. We wait for an answer to prayer, for Him to come through, or for Him to shift or change a difficult situation. It’s easy in our flesh to wonder if God has forgotten us. Or ask if He truly cares.

Psalm 62 was written by David during a time of waiting. It reads, For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” Psalm 62:5-8

This psalm teaches us three ways we can respond in seasons of waiting.

Worship in the Waiting

David wrote this psalm while waiting to be delivered from his enemies, many of whom were close friends and family. We can see throughout this psalm that David is praising God. He worships God by proclaiming that He is David’s refuge and mighty rock.

Often, when we are in a waiting season we are quick to complain about what isn’t going right. We hyper-fixate on what God isn’t doing for us and forget that He is an awesome and mighty Creator! Worshiping God in our seasons of waiting can shift our focus to things of heaven instead of earthly things. This can change our entire outlook.

Talk to God (Pray) in the Waiting

The psalmist writes, “pour out your heart before him.” ‘Him’ refers to God. God wants to have a relationship with us that includes communication. He wants to hear about our stresses, worries, and fears. Like any good parent, He is eager to have His children come to Him with their problems. So in your season of waiting, don’t stop praying. Listen to the words of this psalm, and pour your heart out to God. Even when it seems like He hasn’t answered your prayers, He’s still listening.

Remember in the Waiting

It is easy in times of waiting to lose sight of all that God has done for us. We are quick to become bitter about our current prayers not being answered that we forget about the lifetime of prayers He answered before. Twice in this passage, the psalmist mentions His salvation from God. If you are a believer you have been saved by God. While we are waiting it is so important to remember what God has done before. Ultimately, for all believers, He has saved our very souls. If He was faithful then, we can trust He will be faithful now.

Even in the waiting, worship the Creator, pour your heart out before Him through prayer, and remember what He has done for you. He cares for you and even when it seems like He hasn’t answered, He’s listening. He is for you. Rest in those truths today.
